From Chaos to Order - A Personal Story - Ritesh Mathur

In my corporate days, I lived and breathed emails. Like many, I had my ways of organizing them, but the sheer volume was overwhelming. The thought of reducing email clutter came with the ever-looming fear of missing out. Late one night, after a marathon of meetings, I wrote a script to scrape my emails and extract actionable data.

What began as a simple script quickly evolved into a bot that extracted and organized my email data. I nicknamed it Joule, after the small unit of energy. No, it wasn’t SAP’s Joule— Just something between me and James. #iykyk, living solely on my desktop. It wasn’t even in a Git repository or on the cloud (corporate firewalls, you know). In its first few days, Joule started saving me seconds, then minutes, multiple times a day. It transformed chaos into order without requiring me to change my natural workflow.

This wasn’t some advanced AI marvel—it was just plain old programming. Yet, it became my sixth sense, offering clarity and enabling better decision-making. Over time, Joule tapped into more data sources I had access to, becoming an indispensable tool for efficiency.

When I left my corporate job, I deleted both the codebase and the data. But the impact of Joule stayed with me. As I stepped into the startup world, I wanted to rebuild it—but this time for myself. So, I began scripting again, scraping emails. But every effort failed, not because of a lack of motivation but because the benefits weren’t the same. The quick wins and exponential gains I’d experienced earlier were absent, and usability friction was too high.

Then came an epiphany. My communication had shifted. It was no longer centered on emails but WhatsApp—and especially WhatsApp groups. Professional groups for teams, clients, vendors, and networks—my inbox had moved to WhatsApp. And so had the chaos.

With this realization, I repurposed the bot to work with WhatsApp groups. And just like that, the magic returned. Chaos was tamed once again, but it wasn’t just my problem this time—it was everyone’s. Many professionals, especially those outside the corporate bubble, were overwhelmed by WhatsApp, not emails.
